The World Winners Cup 2023 was a captivating club beach soccer tournament that featured 24 teams from around the globe competing for the coveted title.

The World Winners Cup 2023 featured exciting performances from teams worldwide, with ASD Napoli ultimately emerging as the world champions. Each team displayed unique strengths and competitive spirit, contributing to a memorable tournament.

Here, we’ll take a look at the performances of the teams, with a special focus on the eventual champion, ASD Napoli.

Group Stage:

Group A:

  • ASD Napoli, the Italian powerhouse had a strong start in the group stage. Showcasing their attacking prowess and teamwork. Winning all their group-stage matches convincingly with a total of 12 goals and conceding only 3.
  • The Danish team Copenhagen BSC displayed resilience and determination, winning two of their group matches. Their defence was notable, conceding just 4 goals in the group stage and placing second in the group.
  • Kebbi, the Nigerian team representing Africa demonstrated high spirit on the international stage. Their only win in the group stage was a 15-1 triumph over BS Vion who lost all their matches. Kebbi qualified for the knockout stage as best-losers.

Group B:

  • Real Münster ended their group stage fixtures with a bang, with a 13-2 victory against Naxos BS taking the German team up to six points in Group B.
  • Dalian, the Chinese champions, showcased their skills and determination in the group stage, securing a spot in the knockout stage. Mauricio and Rodrigo’s goal-scoring prowess was a highlight.
  • The Belgian team, FC Genappe, exhibited strong performances in the group stage, winning two matches and displaying a potent attack. Their victory over Naxos was particularly noteworthy.

Group C:

  • Catania FC The Italian club concluded their group stage in impressive fashion, securing a resounding victory with a final score of 14-1 against Casa Benfica Viseu. This win solidified their position at the top of Group C with a total of nine points.
  • Group Position: This win solidified their position at the top of Group C with a total of nine points.
  • Falfala KQ BSC secured a convincing victory in their group-stage match, defeating Canada BSC with a score of 6-2. With this win, Falfala KQ BSC improved their standing in Group C, accumulating six points in total, and finishing second place in the group.
  • Canada BSC with their impressive attacking display, scored a whopping 9 goals in their opening match. But failed to secure a place in the knockout stage.

Group D:

  • Recreativo Huelva from Spain showcased their strength in the group stage, with Casano’s hat-trick being a standout moment. With a full nine points, they secured their place in the knockout stage showing strong performances.
  • Despite their defeat in the match against Recreative Huelva, the Greek side Napoli Patron secured the second position in the group. Their determination saw them advance to the knockout stage.
  • Latvia side Riga FC, despite their loss to Newteam Brussels, qualified for the knockout stage.

Group E:

  • Mazarrón from Spain, delivered a magnificent performance against Marseille BT, showcasing their attacking flair and securing a place in the next round top of Group E.
  • BSC Vybor, the Russian representatives, started their campaign with a solid win against Bologna BS. Their attacking prowess was evident, and they advanced to the knockout stage.
  • Marseille BT victory against Bologna BS was their first win in the tournament. It was a significant achievement for the French team. This win was enough to progress Marseille BT to the next stage of the tournament.

Group F:

  • The Ukrainian side BSC Artur Music had a tight but impressive run, showcasing their fighting spirit. Their 3-2 win against Barra de Santiago sealed their place in the knockout stage.
  • Barra de Santiago showed resilience in their group, including a thrilling comeback win. Their spirit and determination shone through, earning them a spot in the knockout stage.
  • Pafos FC took on Cali BSC in Group F and it was the Cypriot outfit who came out on top in the match, beating the American team 6-2. The first win for the team based in Cyprus qualified them for the next round.

Round of 16: The knockout stage began with intense clashes.

  • In a dominant display, Mazarrón secured their spot in the last eight with an 8-1 victory against Kebbi BSC. Their powerful performance left no room for doubt about their capabilities.
  • Real Münster faced a fierce challenge from Napoli Patron BSC, but they managed to clinch a narrow 5-4 win, advancing to the next stage.
  • Pafos FC orchestrated a dramatic comeback, defeating Dalian 5-4 in a closely contested match. Their resilience and determination earned them a well-deserved victory.
  • Recreativo Huelva sealed their place in the quarter-finals with a nail-biting 6-5 win against Falfala KQ BSC. The match could have gone either way, but Huelva emerged victorious.
  • Barra de Santiago and Copenhagen BSC engaged in an intense battle that extended into extra time. Barra de Santiago eventually triumphed 6-5, earning their spot in the next round.
  • BSC Artur Music secured a 6-4 victory against BSC Vybor, displaying their skill and precision on the sand.
  • ASD Napoli delivered a statement with a massive 15-1 win over Marseille BT, showcasing their dominance in the tournament.
  • The Catania FC and Riga FC match ended in a thrilling 4-4 draw, requiring a penalty shootout to determine the winner. Riga FC emerged victorious, winning the penalty shootout 4-2.

Quarter-Finals:

  • Pafos FC through: The first quarter-final fixture of the day saw Cypriot side, Pafos FC defeat Spanish team, Recreativo Huelva 3-1 
  • Victory for ASD Napoli: In the second quarter-final encounter, ASD Napoli defeated Barra de Santiago 5-3.
  • Late turnaround for Mazarrón: Mazarrón faced Real Münster in the penultimate quarter-final fixture of the day, as the Spanish team won the match 6-5.
  • Final four for Riga FC: The last quarter-final match saw Riga FC win 5-3 against BSC Artur Music. 

Semi-Finals:

In the first semi-final, ASD Napoli demonstrated their prowess as they triumphed over Pafos FC with a final score of 4-2. The victory placed them in a prime position for the coveted championship title.

The second semi-final witnessed a nail-biting clash between Riga FC and Mazarrón. The teams battled fiercely, resulting in a thrilling 4-4 draw in the match. The outcome would be decided by a penalty shootout. Riga FC secured a vital 4-3 victory in the penalty shootout, earning them a spot in the final.

With the stage set for the championship match, ASD Napoli faced Riga FC in a highly anticipated showdown. The final lived up to the excitement, with both teams displaying incredible skill and determination. In the end, ASD Napoli emerged triumphant, sealing a remarkable 6-3 victory over Riga FC and claiming the championship title.

Individual Awards:

  • Lucao was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament, highlighting his exceptional contributions.
  • Paterniti received the Best Goalkeeper award for his solid performances.
  • Alisson was honoured as the Top Scorer, having netted an impressive 14 goals throughout the tournament.
