The Teranga Lions beat Egypt on penalties to claim the 2022 African title to remain at the top of African beach soccer in the 2022 final of the Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations in Mozambique.
The Pharaohs, who earned their first qualification to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in the 2022 edition of the African championships, gave the Senegalese their most challenging match to date, forcing penalties after normal time ended at 2-2. The defending champions held their nerve though and claimed the shootout by six penalties to five.
The Senegalese also scooped the individual awards, as Seydina Diagne won both the Top Scorer and MVP trophies, while the Best Goalkeeper went to Al Seyni Ndiaye – the seventh time the shot-stopper has claimed this award at the continental championships.
In the playoffs for finishing places, Morocco defeated Mozambique by six goals to four to claim third, their joint-best finish in the African championships.
Senegal and Egypt qualify for the 2023 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, which will be the first appearance for the Pharaohs and the ninth for the Lions of Teranga.
