Pro-Am Beach Soccer Making Waves in California

Pro-Am Beach Soccer (PABS) is back and ready to make a splash in 2023!

After a challenging period due to the impacts of COVID-19 and other unforeseen circumstances, PABS is returning with renewed energy and enthusiasm. In this PABS May Newsletter 2023, Tighe O’Sullivan, the mastermind behind the organization, expresses gratitude to all those who have supported PABS and highlights the exciting events planned for the year.

The Santa Cruz Classic & Cal North Beach Soccer State Cup: PABS has made some adjustments to its event lineup this year, focusing on two major tournaments in Northern California. First up is the 19th Annual Santa Cruz Classic, the longest-running FIFA-style beach soccer event in the state. Scheduled for June 17th and 18th, the tournament will take place along the Beach Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, offering participants and spectators a fantastic beach soccer experience. Additionally, PABS is bringing back the 2nd Annual Cal North Beach Soccer State Cup, set to be held in San Francisco on August 5th and 6th. This exciting competition will take place along the Great Highway, with the iconic Cliff House serving as a picturesque backdrop.

Event Postponements and Expansion: While the San Francisco Classic and the Spring Challenge have been postponed due to team availability, PABS is venturing further east in 2023 and 2024. The organization has plans for events in South Padre Island (3rd Annual), San Antonio, and Little Elm, Texas. These upcoming tournaments mark a significant milestone as they will be some of the first landlocked beach soccer events in the United States. PABS plans to more excitement about beach soccer to new locations and share the sport’s joy with a wider audience.

The Move of Cal North State Cup: The decision to move the Cal North Beach State Cup away from Santa Cruz was driven by practical considerations, primarily the cost. Despite bringing substantial revenue to the city and fostering a vibrant beach soccer community, PABS encountered challenges in securing support from Santa Cruz authorities. The escalating costs of hosting the event made it necessary to explore alternative venues. However, PABS remains committed to preserving this long-standing tournament, which has been a cherished part of the beach soccer landscape for nearly two decades.

Supporting Grassroots Growth and Player Development: PABS is dedicated to nurturing the grassroots growth of soccer and creating opportunities for aspiring athletes. Over the years, the organization has played a pivotal role in the development of beach soccer players, with nearly two dozen men and women from Northern California joining the US National Beach Soccer Team. PABS takes pride in the fact that the region has produced an impressive number of national players since its inception in 2005. By promoting the sport’s joy and fostering player development, PABS continues to be at the forefront of beach soccer’s growth.

As summer approaches, PABS invites all supporters and participants to embrace the beach soccer spirit and join them on the sand. With a refreshed outlook, Tighe O’Sullivan and the PABS team are determined to provide unforgettable experiences and create lasting memories for beach soccer enthusiasts. The organization’s commitment to growing the sport and its dedication to player development remains unwavering. Stay tuned for more updates from Pro-Am Beach Soccer, and let the beach soccer adventure continues :))
