Chita: The Godfather of Senegal Beach Soccer

Ibrahima Ndiaye, affectionately known as Chita, is a name that resonates deeply in the Beach Soccer community. With a career spanning over four decades, has dedicated his life to promoting and developing beach soccer in Senegal.

Chita, a former Senegal international footballer in an exclusive interview with Roger Kpeteka, shares his inspiring story, from his humble beginnings to becoming a legendary figure in Beach Soccer.

A Visionary’s Dream

From the shores of Ouakam, Dakar, where his football journey began, to the pinnacle of international competition, Chita’s passion for the beautiful game has known no bounds. Born in 1952, this septuagenarian’s illustrious career spanned decades, including a storied stint as captain of the Senegal national football team. After retiring from international football in the early 2000s, Chita discovered a new passion – Beach Soccer – inspired by Éric Cantona’s efforts to promote the sport in France. Driven by a vision to succeed, Chita followed in Cantona’s footsteps, introducing Beach Soccer to Senegal and persevering through initial skepticism to make the sport a triumph in his country.

“I was captivated by the idea of creating a new sport in Senegal,” Chita recalls. “I saw the potential for Beach Soccer to bring people together and provide opportunities for young players.” – Chita

Chita’s tireless efforts led to the creation of the Senegal beach soccer national team in 2007. Under his guidance, the team achieved unprecedented success, winning seven continental trophies and becoming a dominant force in African Beach Soccer. In recognition of his remarkable contributions, the Chita Cup competition was held in Senegal, serving as a tribute to his enduring legacy in the sport.

“The early days were challenging, but I remained committed to my vision,” Chita says. “I worked tirelessly to promote the sport, and eventually, people began to take notice.” – Chita

A Legacy Beyond Borders

Chita’s impact transcends Senegal’s borders, with his expertise and passion benefiting neighbouring countries, including Guinea-Bissau, Togo, and Mauritania whose beach soccer team recently made history by qualifying for their first CAF Beach Soccer African Cup appearance. Moreover, his tireless efforts in nurturing and developing Senegalese Beach Soccer talent have likely paved the way for a groundbreaking achievement: the transfer of two talented players, Ibra and Toldo, to Germany, a milestone believed to be among the first African Beach Soccer player transfers to Europe.

“Chita’s impact on Beach Soccer in Africa cannot be overstated, he has inspired a generation of players and coaches, and his legacy will continue to shape the sport for years to come.”
– Mahmud Hadejia; President of the African Beach Soccer Union

As a member of the executive committee of the African Beach Soccer Union (ABSU), Chita is playing a crucial role in advising the Union in its formative stage and lobbying for the growth of the game across Africa.

The Future of Beach Soccer

Chita’s concern for the future of Beach Soccer is evident, he emphasises the need for resources and political will to further promote the game. His desire to develop a strong succession plan and involve young people in the sport is a clear indication of his commitment to Beach Soccer’s long-term success.

“We need to invest in the next generation of players and coaches,” Chita stresses. “We must also work to promote the sport at the grassroots level, ensuring that Beach Soccer remains accessible to all.”
