Hello, I’m Abduljelili Ogunmuyiwa, a retired FIFA Beach Soccer Referee with 16 years of experience. I’ve had the privilege of officiating many matches and witnessed the sport’s remarkable growth and evolution. Recently, I reflected on the 2024 CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations and I’m excited to share my thoughts with you.
2015 vs. 2024: CAF Beach Soccer
Compared to the early days, beach soccer has evolved significantly. I’ve observed developments including:
- Advanced training methods such as advanced game analyses, improving player skills.
- Increased competitiveness, with more and more teams participating on a high level.
- Enhanced physical demands with better fitness, nutrition and other essentials.
- Strategic innovations in tactical formations and set pieces.
Personally, I’ve witnessed beach soccer’s growth firsthand. Officiating the 2015 CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations final, where debutants Madagascar surprisingly defeated Senegal, showcases the sport’s dynamic nature – new challengers continually emerge. Notably, Mauritania replicated Madagascar’s feat in 2024, also reaching the final as debutants, but ultimately fell to Senegal. This similarity highlights the constant emergence of new forces in African beach soccer, while Senegal’s back-to-back titles cement their status as a dominant powerhouse.
Growth and Challenges
North Africa’s emergence, particularly Egypt and Morocco, demonstrates the effectiveness of focused programs and investments in beach soccer infrastructure. Similarly, West Africa, driven by powerhouses Senegal, as well Ghana and the rising force Mauritania, is experiencing steady growth, underscoring the region’s increasing presence in the sport.
Mozambique is spearheading East Africa’s beach soccer rise while emerging nations like Tanzania and Malawi are poised for growth. With infrastructure and training facilities development underway, these countries are ready to capitalise on competitive exposure, unlocking their full potential and solidifying the region’s presence in the sport
Key Takeaways
- Competitive Balance: Mauritania’s surprise performance indicates rising competitiveness.
- Skill Growth: Individual talents like Ghana’s Alexander Adjetey demonstrate improving standards.
- Regional Development: North and West Africa’s strength suggests focused programs.
- Infrastructure: Host Egypt’s organisation highlights quality facility importance.
Recommendations
- Invest in grassroots development.
- Enhance regional competitions.
- Develop coaching programs, particularly for emerging nations.
